Virginia Tech and NASA: Guns and America
Today CNN reported yet another public attack by a gunman. NASA, Virginia Tech, the CNN Center. The body count soars. And no one reports on the bodies of young African-Americans slaughtered in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood every week. Our nation is filled with gun violence.
At least this time the NRA had the good sense not to hold a public rally in Blacksburg. Though one of its mouthpieces, Ted Nugent, was given voice on the CNN web site. He called gun-control advocates evil. Do these people know evil? Did they not see the videos and images that flooded the media this week of a mentally ill young man with guns?
Do we really not have the will to take action? Thomas Jefferson said that laws and constitutions must change. It is time to repeal an amendment that stopped making sense a century ago. We do not need automatic weapons, handguns, 14 round clips. We are not under the threat of invasion. And easy access to guns is not making us safer. It is just making the gun industry richer.
I pray for NRA members, for the wicked consequences of their misguided and manipulated stand. I pray that they will come to know Christ. The Christ that was tortured by an occupation army. The Christ that defied a wicked government. The Christ that rebuked the disciple in the Garden when he took up a weapon. The Christ we call the Prince of Peace.
